The toxic potential of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to the bacterial community in the shallow, freshwater Lake Ontario (L.O.) sediment was investigated by use of a bioassay. The bioassay was based on the growth of the marine bacterium Pseudomonas putida to the PAH concentrations of the sediments. A survey of 32 PAHs indicated that the L.O. sediment contained high concentrations of low molecular weight, naphthalene-type PAHs. In the sediment microcosms, p-xylene, anthracene, and pyrene had 50% effective concentrations (EC50) in the 10(-7)M to 10(-6)M range. Several naphthalenes, such as 1-methylnaphthalene, 7-methylnaphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene, 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene, and 2,3,5,6-tetramethylnaphthalene, had EC50's in the 10(-5)M to 10(-4)M range. PAH-contaminated sediments that contained concentrations of anthracene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and benzo[a]pyrene below 10(-7)M significantly stimulated the growth of the L.O. bacterial community. However, naphthalenes that were found at L.O. sediment concentrations as high as 10(-5)M had no effect on the growth of the bacteria. These results indicate that the PAH-mediated stimulatory effect of the L.O. sediment on the growth of the marine bacteria is mainly due to the naphthalene-type compounds, and that such a stimulatory effect on ac619d1d87
